Energy Storage Systems offer a number of option in relation to storing and using renewable energy. Below we describe a number of these in more detail and basically they can be devided into systems offering local services to the owner, such as peak shaving, emergency power and deferred usage while other systems are used in more broader applications supporting grid functions such as Frequency regulation and Congestion management.

In a number of cases, these services can be mixed and served from a single storage system such as offering EPEX Imbalance services while providing community services as well.

Peak Shaving

Peak-Shaving is a technolgy that reduces contracted cost by adding energy from an energy storage system to any energy drawn from the grid. Peak-shaving can be done in both large and small installations configured either as ‘parallel feed-in’ or ‘serial feed-in’. 

Parallel feed-in

For parallel feed-in the Energy Stroage System is conneted to the main entry point of power, usually a MV transformer, where a very fast meter is connected in the main connection. Once power reaches a critical level, the converter(s) in the Energy Storage System start delivering power to maintain a power level below the agred maximum level.

This methode is very useful in larger applicaions wherbey multiple random machines can generate peaks since the power measurment is non-selective: every power peak is measured and acted upon.

Serial feed-in

Serial feed-in can be used for applications where the machine that creates the peak is connected in series with the peak shaver. In such case, the peak shaver is only started if this individually connected device is creating a power peak during start-up. In most cases installation is easier since little or no changes to excisting wiring is needed.

Energy Trade

Storing PV- and Wind Energy in an energy storage system enables you to sell this energy at time when the prices are more luceative than during standard feed-in. Price on the Power Exchanges can vary greatly due to discrapacies in supply and demand and errors made in prediction made by companies offering renewable energy on the power exchange.  

These system are usually larger and often housed in a 20 or 40 feet container connected directly to the MV-transformer so the electric installation on-site does not have to be upgraded. Controlled by a 3rd party that has the permits to trade on the Energy Exchange, the system follows commands that are received and that depend on the 15-minute pricing.

In many cases the ATEPS systems also measures PV or Wind power, usage and other parameters in order to prevent overload of the MV-transformer.


Many neighbourhoods build in the sixties and seventies are not suitable for a high percentage of houses that have PV-panels installed. Especially in those neighbourhoods that are connected using a single phase, the PV-converters often reach their maximum voltage and hence switch off. This greatly influences the payback period for the owners of the PV-INstallation and changing this situation is often too difficult. Connecting the houses on a 3-phase network will help but this would also mean the owners need to purchace a 3-phase PV-converter. 

Adding a Neighbourhood Battery that can ‘absorb’ the energy generated by the individual houses and their PV-installation will enable loading the 1-phase grid and storing the generated energy within the neighbourhood. Depending on the agreement made with the local grid operator, this energy can be supplied back to the original generating family or used for other applications such a peak shaving, energy trade or FCR. 

Small Office

A large number of applications can be found in office and the smaller industry where PV- and wind energy is stored locally and used at a later time (deferred usage), used for peak shaving or as emergency power supply.

For a very select number of applications and customers, ATEPS will engineer dedicated systems that can be integrated by the OEM into their own system. 

These projects can vary from only batteries and the BMS to more complex solutions whereby the ATEPS control software is adapted to specific needs, markets and applications.
